Kia has unveiled its new Cross GT concept at the Chicago Motor Show.
We told you about the Cross GT last week but all we could offer you at the time was a rubbish teaser image which showed a computer-generated interpretation of the Cross GT parked up in a very dark room. Now though we can reveal what the Cross GT concept looks like when the photographer has correctly exposed the photograph.
The Cross GT is based on the existing Sorento, but is 41mm shorter, 124mm wider and a full 213mm longer. Kia has also increased the wheelbase by 399mm, which should dramatically improve interior space.
Kia has fitted a hybrid powertrain to the Cross GT which utilises a 3.8-litre V6 mated to an electric motor. According to Kia, the electric motor is pancake-shaped and, while we're not quite sure of the reasoning behind this, it's nice to see that Kia is getting in the Easter mood (it's Shrove Tuesday next week, in case you'd forgotten).
Where was I? Oh yes, the Cross GT also gets an eight-speed automatic gearbox which sends the engine's 400bhp and 500lb-ft to an all-wheel drive system. Kia also claims that the Cross GT can travel up to 20 miles on electric power alone.
On the inside, the Cross GT gets four bucket seats which are illuminated by the car's mad, but slightly brilliant, hexagonal sunroof design. The rear is accessed via suicide doors and a 'clam shell' rear door provides access to the boot.
We must say, we do like the look of the Cross GT concept, which is a bit of a shame considering that Kia has said it has no plans whatsoever to put it into production.
