It’s 25 years since Kia began selling its cars on the UK market.
The Korean brand arrived in the UK in 1991 with just one model – the Kia Pride – and sold just 1,800 cars in that debut year, a figure Kia’s 188-strong dealer network now sells on average every fortnight. A total of 763,500 Kia’s have found UK homes in the past quarter-century, with 44% of those coming in the past five years as the range underwent rapid expansion. The current 12 car range covers nine segments, with three engine options, and Kia’s seven-year warranty. The all-new petrol hybrid Kia Nero will join the range next month to broaden Kia’s wide range of options.
The Kia Picanto has been the best selling model, with 156,000 UK sales to date, followed closely by the Sportage with 140,000 sold.
Paul Philpott, President and CEO of Kia Motors (UK) Ltd, said: “Kia has been on quite a journey in recent years. Within Kia’s time in the UK we have grown from a relatively small importer to challenging the best and most established brands in the industry. We have a fantastic, ever growing, range of cars and in 2016 and 2017 we will launch fourteen new and face-lifted cars. Kia are certainly not resting on its laurels for the next 25 years as we expand our sales and dealer network in the UK.”
