Is driving barefoot illegal? It's a straight forward question, and it is one that the general public don't seem to be confident about answering correctly. But, the simple answer is, "No. Driving barefoot is not illegal."
When you google the words - "is it illegal to drive..." you get the following suggestions:
1. Is it illegal to drive barefoot
2. Is it illegal to drive without shoes
3. Is it illegal to drive in flip flops
It is a question that people are clearly asking a lot and after doing some research it seems that the majority of drivers are unsure. In fact, it seems that a sizeable amount think it is illegal, with only 15% of people questioned responding with a confident, "No".
Whilst it is not illegal though, it should be noted that driving safely and with proper care is something that you are legally obliged to do. So, we wouldn't necessarily go on record to recommend driving bare foot, but we would definitely say it is preferable to driving in high heels or flip flops.
Here's a few words of warning for driving with naked feet:
1. Sweaty feet can be slippy on the pedals.
2. On long journeys the balls of your feet can become sore (shoes distribute pressure evenly).
3. Repeatedly using the clutch (particularly if you're using your toes) can lead to spasms and cramps.
4. Emergency stops could lead to injury.
5. Do not kick your heels/flipflops off in the footwell as they can obstruct the pedals and cause an accident.
In summary, if you're driving bare foot you don't need to feel like a fugitive of the law, but please drive safely!
