Police bust luxury car smugglers at Tilbury docks with the assistance of vehicle tracking technology.
TRACKER, who are the UK’s leading provider of stolen vehicle recovery systems, followed one of their devices after a theft and located the signal at Tilbury near London. The signal appeared to be coming from a shipping container and when police opened it, they were given a huge surprise.
Inside the 40 foot steel container were four Range Rovers packed in tightly and even on top of each other. The cars were estimated to be worth around £250,000 and were about to be smuggled out of the country never to be seen again. Cars have found themselves in Africa, China and all over the world in a multi-million pound trade.
“The Port of Tilbury, like other major UK ports, has always been a hotspot that criminals use to get stolen vehicles out of the country in a short period of time. However, according to police, criminal gangs are now also using less familiar ports, such as Grangemouth, in Scotland, Immingham or Killingholme, in East Yorkshire, to ship high value vehicles out of the country”, explained Adrian Davenport, Police Liaison Manager for TRACKER.
