Honda is targeting a new Guinness World Record for fuel efficiency with a planned 8,500-mile journey taking in all 24 European Union countries.
The stunt is designed to showcase the efficiency of the 1.6 i-DTEC engine, which will power a Honda Civic Tourer piloted by two members of Honda’s European Research & Development team. Starting next Monday (1 June) in Aalst, Belgium, their epic journey will then see them head towards the Netherlands and Germany with the aim of returning to their starting point some 8,459 miles and 25 days later. Honda hope to prove along the way that the 1.6 i-DTEC engine will consistently out-perform its quoted fuel efficiency in real-world driving conditions.
To meet the requirement of the Guinness World Records title attempt, the intrepid pair of Fergal McGrath and Julian Warren – colleagues from Honda’s Swindon plant in the UK – must be in the car for every kilometre of the trip, and will be sharing a driving itinerary which averages 370 miles per day over around 7.5 hours. If successful, the official Guinness World Record title will be ‘Lowest Fuel Consumption – all 24 contiguous EU countries’, and will be measured by analysing a range of evidence including fuel and mileage log books, GPS readings, video and photographic proof, and independent witnesses. Under the stringent rules the car must be standard in every respect, and as it can only travel overland the UK, Ireland, Cyprus, and Malta miss out, but the route will take in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.
Philip Crossman, Managing Director of Honda UK comments: “Since its launch in 2013 we have seen the 1.6 i-DTEC engine consistently over-perform on real-world fuel efficiency in our Civic, Civic Tourer and CR-V models, and this is our opportunity to put it to the ultimate test on a huge scale. We are very confident of a great result and we wish the team all the very best of luck as they take on the challenge.”
