Chevrolet announced at the prices for the forthcoming Volt electric car at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, receiving endorsement from celebrity petrolhead Jay Leno.

The car will cost from £28,545 when it is released next year, taking into account the £5,000 government grant for electric-powered vehicles. This is significantly higher than other electric cars, however, the car is much larger than most of its rivals and with a claimed 400 mile range, is a more practical option as well.

This is mainly due to the fact that the Volt is not a true electric car at all, but a hybrid. It has a 1.4 litre engine and a lithium ion battery that can power the car on its own for a range of up to 50 miles.

Whether the government’s incentive will be enough to tempt drivers from petrol powered cars remains to be seen.
