A classic Jaguar E-Type has sold for a staggering £58,000 at a London auction despite spending much of its life festering under a hedge in Surrey.
The 1963 model was delivered new to Ivor Arbiter – Drum City proprietor and designer of the Beatles’ ‘drop-T’ logo – before passing into the hands of racing driver Frank Riches. He raced the E-Type at Oulton Park, Blackbushe, and Brands Hatch in the late 60s but after burning out the clutch laid the car up, firstly in a lock up garage but then under a hedge in his garden in Bisley from where it was rescued last year. The 53-year old E-Type has less than 45,000-miles on the clock and still had the November 1969 expiry tax disc in the windscreen when it was snapped up for £58,000 at the COYS Spring Classics auction.
“The derelict E-Type attracted attention from all four corners of the world and bidders in a packed auction room and via telephone fought fiercely for it on Tuesday night”, said COYS CEO Chris Routledge. “It ended up going to an English collector and Beatles enthusiast who plans to slowly restore it to its former glory.”
