Confirmation has come from Land Rover that the company has been secretly testing the world’s first premium compact SUV convertible, based on its popular Range Rover Evoque model, with a planned sales launch to follow in 2016.
The company has gone to great lengths to conduct testing of the model in total privacy, and obtained exclusive access to the 26-mile network of Crossrail tunnels to enable its engineers to covertly test drive the Evoque Convertible with its roof down. This is not a new tactic from Land Rover, who celebrated the launch of the five-door Range Rover Evoque in 2011 by driving an example through Liverpool’s Edge Hill Tunnel.
Director of Land Rover Programmes Murray Dietsch said: “The tunnels are still under construction, so we had a unique opportunity to explore the vehicle’s all-terrain ability in unchartered territory.”
Scheduled for launch in 2016, the Range Rover Evoque Convertible will be built alongside the five-door and Coupe versions at Land Rover’s UK facility at Halewood in Merseyside. The company will release more detailed information about the model later this year.
