Ford has announced plans to launch a fully electric SUV with an estimated 300 mile range within the next three years.

With engine and technology advances helping SUVs to shed their gas-guzzling image, the sector has seen a resurgence in sales – up by more than a fifth in 2012 – and Ford has responded to that demand from consumers by confirming that the new zero-emissions SUV will be one of five new models to be introduced by 2020. Its estimated range of 300 miles will be enough for a journey from London to Paris. The EcoSport, Kuga, and Edge models have fuelled a 320% rise in Ford SUV sales in the UK.

“SUV sales are rising faster than any other type of vehicle in Europe, and eco-conscious Millennials are a driving force behind growing SUV demand. Last year, Ford’s SUV sales outpaced even this rapid industry growth,” said Ford’s Roelant de Waard.
