New figures have led to Ford making the bold claim that the Mustang is now the world’s most popular sports car.
Long the best-selling sports car in America, the model’s introduction into Europe and other global markets has seen the Ford Mustang top the worldwide sales charts for the sector according to business analysts IHS Markit.
Over 150,000 Ford Mustangs were sold last year, a global increase of 6% on 2015. Nearly 45,000 of those were sold outside of the Mustang’s domestic market, pushing non-US market growth up to a staggering 101% on the previous year.
The Mustang’s first full year of sales in Europe saw 15,335 units ordered, making it thebest-selling sports car in European markets including France, Sweden, Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Finland and Greece. Over 4,500 have now been sold in the UK, with over 3,250 of those in 2016. Since launching in China in 2015, the Ford Mustang has become the best-selling sports car in the world’s biggest market, with sales up 74% in 2016.
Having been introduced across the globe, the Ford Mustang is in 140 countries, and on all continents other than Antarctica.
A new limited edition Ford Mustang model was recently announced for the UK, priced from £39,895. The 5.0-litre V8 Ford Mustang Shadow Edition is finished in Race Red or Grabber Blue, with a unique bodystyling pack that includes black Pony emblem for the GT grille, black 19-inch Y spoke alloy wheels, a Shaker Pro audio system with SYNC 3 Navigation, climate controlled seats and reverse parking sensors, and optional contrasting black roof.
