Walter Owen Bentley once famously claimed that "there's no replacement for displacement." Well, it seems Ford are intent on proving him wrong, having just set 16 world speed records... in a 1.0-litre Ford Focus.

The Ford Focus EcoBoost set 16 Federation International de l'Automobile (FIA) world speed records at the hands of drivers such as WRC star Jari-Matti Latvala at the CERAM test circuit in Mortefontaine, France last month.

The car set the sub-1.0-litre class records for covering 1 mile from a standing start and covering 1 mile from a flying start, and also set the record for the highest average speed achieved over 24 hours, covering 2,500 miles in the process.

The Focus EcoBoost was launched in February and can get from 0-62mph in 11.3 seconds and on to a top speed of 120mph, thanks to its 123bhp 1.0-litre engine.

The full list of records achieved by the EcoBoost is shown below.
