Leicester City’s surprise lead in the Premier League title has given rise to another phenomenon in the East Midlands city, according to sales data released by Skoda.
The manufacturer has found that sales of blue cars in Leicester, matching the hue of the Foxes’ home strip, have shot up by 340% compared to last year
“This is a hugely proud and passionate city, and one that has been waiting a long time for its football team to climb to the top of the league”, said Mick Brown, Senior Manager at Skoda dealership Sandicliffe Skoda.
“Now that’s a reality, we are seeing a blue revolution, not just on the pitch but off it, too. Blue is, by far, the most popular colour we’re taking orders for.”
The discovery prompted Skoda, who have recently released new Fabia and Citigo Colour Edition models, to delve deeper into their data to find out if football influences car buying choices in other areas of the country. They found that sales of red and blue cars in Manchester, home of reds of Manchester United and the sky blue clad Manchester City, are significantly higher than the national average, while sales of white or red cars at Skoda’s Walthamstow dealership in North London are higher than in the rest of the UK, perhaps influenced by the proximity of Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.
Skoda went further, commissioning research in which 1,000 football fans across the UK were asked if their team’s strip influenced their choice of car colour. It revealed that so-called ‘colour loyalty’ is most prevellent amongst younger drivers, with more than one-fifth of drivers aged under 25 saying they would choose a car finished in the same colour as their football team’s home kit.
