Mazda have claimed that their new CX-5 compact 4x4 will form the basis of future Mazda C and D segment cars.
The CX-5 is Mazda's first SKYACTIV model and was engineered from the outset to herald a revolution in the way Mazda build their cars. Mazda began developing their SKYACTIV technology in 2006 and the CX-5 was developed from 2009 onwards. The future Mazda6 and Mazda3 will use the same architecture as the CX-5 despite being vastly different in size, and having different engines and track widths.
CX-5 programme manager, Kideaki Tanaka said that the CX-5 marked a complete change in the development process for Mazda. The change is obviously an attempt to cut costs as it allows Mazda to develop three new cars for the price of one and it is likely that this is something we will see increasingly from a number of car manufacturers. Mazda must therefore hope that CX-5 is well received.
The Mazda CX-5 is released in the UK next spring.
