As British car owners are banned from cleaning their vehicles using a hosepipe this summer, car care experts at Autoglym have issued a number of useful tips on how to keep vehicles gleaming despite the hosepipe ban.

Since April 5th, car owners living in the South and East of England have been subject to a hosepipe ban, affecting the way in which they clean their vehicles. To tackle the potential problems this may cause, Autoglym has released several tips on how to keep cars pristine – including washing them with a bucket of water.

The secret to making the most of your water is to use the right shampoo and Autoglym claims that by using an advanced shampoo with a rinse agent, you can get the job done quickly and effectively.

“With such a mild winter, we anticipated the possibility of hosepipe bans and, having conducted trials over the last few months with and without hosepipes, our Technical Services Specialists have found that it is just as effective to use a watering can to rinse off our Bodywork Shampoo Conditioner,” said Paul Caller, CEO of Autoglym.

However, Caller did warn that “it is important to use a rose to help each drop of water carry away the suds. Without a rose, the watering can will dispense far more water than is needed. By being careful, most cars can be washed with just one bucket and one rose-adorned watering can.”

Optimising the car wash

Once the rose is securely fixed, motorists should start washing the car from the top, working their way down the car’s body. Likewise, the same direction (top to bottom) should be followed when rinsing the shampoo and drivers should mop up any remaining suds as and where necessary.

Additionally, Autoglym said that it is important to keep the car away from direct sunlight to avoid the shampoo drying too soon and helping car owners achieve the streak free shine they crave.
