An auction at the Birmingham NEC saw a staggering £4.4 million worth of classic cars go under the hammer at the weekend.
That was the total sale amount when Silverstone Auctions took to the stage at the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show. The two-day auction saw 80% of the 95 lots on offer sold.
Fast Fords proved to be a star attraction, with a 1985 Ford Escort RS Turbo Series 1 selling for a record £60,188, while a time warp 1987 Ford Sierra Cosworth with just 13,000 miles on the clock went for £90,000.
Other highlights included a 1993 Ferrari 512 TR which sold for £75,000 over and above its lower estimate, the hammer finally dropping at £185,625 including premium. A further £315,000 towards the £4.4 million total came from the £315,000 paid for a 1991 Jaguar XJ220 formerly owned by the Brunei Royal Family.
A brace of star cars also went under the hammer; comic legend Peter Sellers’ old 1966 Lotus Elan S2 sold for £50,625, while a 1973 1973 Ferrari 365 GT4 2+2 once owned by boxing champ Henry Cooper sold for £30,938.
Nick Whale, Silverstone Auctions’ managing director said: “The atmosphere at the sale was electric and I’m delighted we’ve been able to secure such great prices on behalf of our vendors, as well as breaking a few records along the way. The key sign of a successful auction is when you have both happy sellers and happy buyers and this time we are proud to have achieved both!”
