A new entry-level 80bhp Caterham Seven will go on show at the Frankfurt Motor Show next week.

Dubbed the Caterham Seven 160, the new model is powered by a three-cylinder Suzuki 660cc engine which has been given a thorough going over by Caterham's engineering division, Caterham Technology and Innovation.

The engine has been tuned to deliver 80bhp and 79lb-ft of torque and has also been optimised to deliver improved fuel consumption and lower CO2 emissions. Caterham claims that the engine also complies with the EU5 emissions standards, allowing it to be sold across mainland Europe, where it will be known as the 165.

The Caterham Seven 160 will become the cheapest model in the Caterham range when it goes on sale early next year with a price tag of less than £17,000 -- £6,000 less than the current entry-level model.

Caterham Cars CEO Graham Macdonald said: "The engineering process involved in the creation of the Caterham Seven 165 is nearing completion and, as we piece together the final elements, the car we believe will inspire a new generation of drivers to become Caterham enthusiasts is taking shape in exciting fashion."
