Cadillac's new ELR range-extender hybrid has been unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show and is due to go into production later this year.
The ELR is the third model to be based on GM's range-extender platform, following the Chevrolet Volt and the Vauxhall Ampera; however, unlike its forebears, the ELR is a two-door coupe which features styling traits taken from Cadillac's 2009 Converj concept car.
The ELR's all-new body is optimised for aerodynamic efficiency, featuring a sealed underbody and a tweaked Cadillac 'egg crate' grille to minimise drag. But despite these improvements, the ELR only achieves a drag coefficient of 0.30. The Chevrolet Volt, by comparison, manages a Cd of 0.28.
The ELR has an all-electric range of around 35 miles and a total range of around 300 miles, putting it on par with the Volt. The two cars are evenly matched in terms of performance too, both topping out at around 100mph.
On the inside, Cadillac is desperately trying to up its game in the quality stakes and the ELR's cabin is the most accomplished Cadillac interior yet. The interior is swathed in carbon-fibre and leather and an 8-inch touch screen features prominently.
The ELR will go on sale in Europe in 2014. Prices have yet to be announced and it is unclear whether Cadillac will offer the car with right-hand drive.
