Cadillac has teased its forthcoming ELR hybrid ahead of the car's debut at next month's Detroit Motor Show.

The ELR, which is based on the Converj concept car first shown at the 2009 Detroit Show, is essentially an upmarket, two-door coupe version of the Vauxhall Ampera and the Chevrolet Volt.

Underneath, the ELR is expected to be fitted with the same range-extender hybrid technology as its GM stablemates, with a four-pot petrol engine used to recharge a lithium-ion battery which, in turn, powers an electric motor to drive the wheels.

General Motors North America President Mark Reuss said: "The ELR will be in a class by itself, further proof of our commitment to electric vehicles and advanced technology."

Production of the ELR is expected to start at GM's Detroit-Hamtramck factory late in 2013; however, it is unclear whether the new model will be offered for sale in the UK.
