Irish racer, Keith Cronin, is set to be welcomed in the opening round of this year’s British Rally Championship, making it his second appearance in the event.
Cronin, the double champion, will return to the event this year, driving a Twingo Renaultsport R1 Trophy.
His debut at the British Rally Championship occurred in 2009 where he won on his first attempt – affording him a place in motoring history.
This victory made Cronin the first Irishman to take the title since 1974, when Billy Coleman achieved the victory. Cronin is also the first Irishman to have won the title twice – meaning his performance at this year’s event could lead to him attaining further accolades.
Cronin’s appearance this year is being labelled as a ‘one-off promotion’, exhibiting the Twingo Renaultsport in its home territory.
Cronin expressed his excitement at being put behind the wheel of this powerful vehicle, stating that he “hope[s] [he] can show what the car is capable of doing and provide a competitive bench mark for the other Twingo competitors.”
According to Trophy Manager Simon Moss, the “Twingo Trophy is new to the UK this year”, making its debut at the British Rally Championship the first competitive outing for the R1 model.
Putting Cronin behind the wheel is, therefore, designed to create a lasting impression for spectators, helping to promote the new model and the performance which it is capable of.
Moss explained that the use of Cronin will “make a splash” within the automotive racing world, helping to promote the Twingo Trophy.
Cronin will be partnered by co-driver Seb Marshall, a British Rally Champion and World Rally Championship Academy driver.
The Twingo Renaultsport R1 Trophy will be sponsored by Mantis Performance Car Care.
The British Rally Championship Rallye Sunseeker International will begin on Poole Quay at the end of the month with stages of the race continuing into the next day.
