Fiat has announced that they will unveil the latest 500 to the public on the fourth of July.

The date has become a Fiat 500 tradition, with the iconic original launched July 4 1957, and the latest 500 officially unveiled on the same date half a century later.

The original Dante Giacosa designed Fiat 500, with its rear-mounted, air-cooled, 479cc engine producing 13bhp, became a massive sales hit for the Italian automotive giant, with more than 3.6 million finding homes during an 18-year life span.

Fiat went onto produce a succession of city cars, including the 126, Cinquecento, and Seicento, before resurrecting the 500 name eight years ago. Launched on July 4 2007, the current 500 saw the engine moved to the front, but with quirky, retro-inspired styling the new model went onto to enjoy a level of popularity similar to its 1950s ancestor. Almost a quarter of a million have been sold in the UK in the past eight years, and over one-and-a-half million have been sold worldwide in 100 markets.

Fiat are yet to release further information regarding the upcoming new model launch, but fans of the 500 will be awaiting this fourth of July with bated breath.
