Rebecca Adlington has teamed up with BMW to highlight how advancements in vehicle aerodynamics can be used to analyse the hydrodynamics of her underwater performance.

Got that? No? Okay, we'll explain.

BMW attached two metre-long ribbons to Rebecca's swimsuit and then used high-speed cameras to analyse their movement while she went for a swim. Apparently, by analysing the high-speed footage, Rebecca could work out ways in which to improve her efficiency in the water.

This is clearly a bit of shameless self-promotion by BMW, but it does illustrate an interesting point: technology developed by car manufacturers can have other practical non-automotive applications. Indeed, the world's biggest marques spend millions each year on making their cars as good as possible and, ultimately, we all benefit from the investments they make in new technology.
