The Range Rover has been with us for forty-three years now and in that time it has earned itself a deserved reputation as a motoring icon. When Land Rover's engineers were tasked with improving the old model, they were under a lot of pressure to ensure that the new Rangey lived up to the reputation of its forebears.
Thankfully, their efforts paid off and the fourth-generation Range Rover is not only a worthy addition the Range Rover's lineage, but quite simply the greatest SUV the world has ever seen.
On the inside, the Range Rover offers the sumptuous luxury and elegance you'd normally expect to be offered in a high-end German saloon. However, unlike a German saloon, the Rangey can quite literally climb ev'ry mountain and ford ev'ry stream. Whereas most cars offer a choice between off-road ability and luxury, the Range Rover proves that you really can have the best of both worlds.
Jeremy Hicks, Managing Director at Jaguar Land Rover UK, accepts the award on behalf of the Range Rover from CarSite Head of Online Advertising Christian Long
Land Rover has lopped 420kg off the weight of the old model thanks to extensive use of aluminium. Not only does this give the car lower CO2 emissions and better fuel economy -- the entry-level 3.0-litre diesel will manage 37mpg on the combined cycle -- but it also dramatically improves the Rangey's handling.
You'll need deep pockets to both buy the Rangey and keep it on the road but that's the price you pay for this level of engineering. Providing your pockets are deep enough, we wouldn't hesitate recommending the Range Rover -- it is one of the finest cars on the market today.
