Since the glory days of the hot hatchback, the 1980s, small performance cars have become increasingly sanitised. Sure, they're more comfortable, more economical, safer and, in the real world, faster than ever before; however, there are very few cars around that offer the same visceral thrill you'd get from hot hatchbacks of old. The Renaultsport Megane 265 Cup is one of those cars.
Renault have always had a knack for building blistering pocket-rockets and the 265 Cup shows the French manufacturer on fine form. With a 265bhp turbocharged petrol lump churning out 261bhp and 265lb-ft of torque, the Megane is good for 0-62mph in 6.0 seconds and a top speed of 158mph. This, technically speaking, makes it faster than a BMW M5.
CarSite Head of Online Advertising Christian Long presents the award to Dacia
The super-sharp steering, fantastic Brembo brakes and stiffer Cup chassis make the Megane an absolute hoot to drive. On the inside, the Recaro seats and chunky leather steering wheel feel fantastic, giving the car a purposeful, race-oriented feel.
The Megane Renaultsport 265 Cup captures the very essence of what a hot hatchback should be, and while it's not the most comfortable or practical car in its class, it is our favourite.
