The winner of our estate car award must, obviously, offer plenty of space for carrying people and luggage. But in addition to this, it must be cheap to run, good to drive and make their owners glad they didn't choose the hatchback.

Ford Mondeo EstateThe Ford Mondeo Estate does just about everything you could realistically ask of a big family estate car. The boot is genuinely massive, there are some excellent engines -- the diesels in particular are superb -- and on top of this it's both good to drive and comfortable. Deeply impressive. |

Jaguar XF SportbrakeIf it's performance and looks you're after when choosing an estate, the Jaguar XF Sportbrake could be the car for you. It's neither the most cavernous nor the most practical estate car in the world but it makes up for this with its stunning looks, gorgeous interior and excellent driving experience. |

Audi RS4 AvantThe Audi RS4 Avant is one of the best driver's cars in the world. Period. The 4.2-litre V8 is sublime and the Audi handles like a supercar, making it without question the most thrilling estate car in the world. And on top of that, it remains a practical family workhorse with enough boot space for even the most expensive trip to IKEA. |
