Black has made a spectacular resurgence to become the colour of choice for car buyers according to new data released by CAP HPI, publishers of the aptly-monikered industry guide Black Book.
Market anaylsis by the company has shown that black is considered de rigueur for most sectors of the UK car market, with buyers deserting the previously popular white in their droves.
Almost a third (29%) of new coupe cabriolets are now ordered with black paint, while the large executive and executive car sectors both tell a similar story with 28% of buyers pitching for black paintwork. A quarter of new SUV’s sold are chosen in black, and the colour is also the most popular choice for buyers of luxury executive cars (24%), sports cars (23%), mid-range cars (22%), and convertibles (21.5%).
The only sectors to buck the trend are the city car market where red is the most popular choice (18%), and the silver-dominated MPV and supermini sectors (27% and 19% of sales respectively).
“Black is without doubt the new white”, said Phillip Nothard of CAP HPI. “White had become the colour of choice over the past few years but black seems to be back with a vengeance. Black represents a safe choice for motorists as, along with silver and grey, these so called safe colours consistently maintain their value when sold as used.”
