Audi has released the first official images and details of the A3 e-tron concept, a petrol-electric hybrid version of the A3 which is due to be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show next month.
Audi claims that its e-tron technology will play a "decisive role" in its future model strategy, stating that it offers "impressive performance, exceptional efficiency and, equally crucially, complete freedom from 'range anxiety'."
The A3 e-tron is powered by a combination of 1.4-litre TFSI petrol engine and electric motor, which together produce 201bhp and 258lb-ft of torque. 0-62mph takes 7.6 seconds -- around the same as the 1.8-litre petrol models in the standard A3 range -- and top speed is 138mph.
But the real news lies in the e-tron's economy figures. Audi claims that the A3 Sportback-based e-tron is capable of returning 188mpg, while emitting just 35g/km of CO2.
The car can run on electric power alone for up to 31 miles and at speeds of up to 80mph, or can solely on petrol power. Alternatively, the driver can choose to run both power sources simultaneously -- a function which Audi calls 'boosting'.
