Audi has unveiled a new limited edition of its R8 V10. With 562bhp, the new R8 LMX is not only the most powerful R8 ever made, it's also the first production car ever to features laser headlights as standard.
The new laser lights, which operate at speeds above 37mph, work in conjunction with the R8's standard LED lights to provide increased visibility for the driver. Audi claims that the technology offers twice the illumination of standard LED lights. A camera-based sensor system is used to detect other road users, adjusting the light pattern automatically to avoid dazzle
BMW's new i8 supercar will also be fitted with the new technology; however, it seems that Audi is rushing the LMX out so it can claim a first for the laser lights.
Under the bonnet, the R8 LMX's 5.2-litre V10 boasts 20bhp more than the standard R8 V10, with 562bhp on tap. The power is sent to all four wheels through a seven-speed S-tronic double clutch gearbox and as a result, 0-62mph takes just 3.4 seconds -- 0.1 seconds quicker than the R8 V10 -- while the top speed has increased by 1mph to 198mph.
On the outside, the R8 LMX is finished in an exclusive Ara Blue painti finish -- a reference to the colour of the laser beam which powers the headlights. Daytona Grey matt paint and Mythos Black metallic finishes can also be specified.
On top of this, a large, fixed rear spoiler is also fitted, along with a smattering of carbon-fibre details and 19-inch, 20-spoke alloy wheels with carbon-fibre ceramic brake discs.
The LMX will make its public debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed next month. Just 99 examples will be sold, each priced rom £160,025.
