A 1968 Austin Mini Van which is in virtually ‘as new’ condition is expected to fetch between £23-25,000 when it goes under the hammer at the Birmingham NEC later this month.
Described by specialists at Silverstone Auctioneers as a ‘time warp’, the Mini will be auctioned at the Practical Classics Restoration Show on 28 March.
Originally bought by a Miss Crumcott of Northern Ireland for £400, the Mini was first registered on 14 March 1968. She planned to learn to drive in the Mini, however it was kept unused in her garage for almost 30 years as she never managed to pass the driving test. It was sold to a local Mini specialist, Mr Turkington, in 1997, and he used it as a centrepiece for his showroom for nine years before selling it to a collector from Northamptonshire. In that time, the Mini has covered a mere 302 miles.
The Mini Van, with a common chassis and body to the Traveller model minus the side windows, was a popular model in the 1960s, in no small part due to the fact that as a commercial vehicle it was not subject to sales tax.
The Mini is completely original, down to the rubber floor maths and seat protectors. It still sits on its original set of Dunlop crossply tyres, as well as the original exhaust and sealed Lucas battery. The original toolbox is also included, and remains unopened.
Silverstone Auctions’ managing director Nick Whale said, “We are thrilled to be offering this virtually unused and untouched Austin Mini Van at our sale. This rare find is in ‘as new’ condition and is surely an alluring, promising prospect for Mini or other collectors in the market. Our sale at the Practical Classics Restoration Show is the perfect place to find your next project or road ready classic car and this very special Mini is sure to attract much interest when it goes under the hammer.”
