Alfa Romeo has released the first official photos of the new 4C sports car, ahead of its public unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show next month.

The new 4C is the first model to be launched as part of Alfa Romeo's new global growth strategy, and will herald the return of the Italian brand to the US market.

As the pictures reveal, the final version of the 4C looks almost identical to the original concept car, which was revealed at the Geneva Motor Show back in 2011. At just less than 4m in length, 2m in width and 118cm in height, the 4C will weigh less than 1000kg and produce more than 250bhp per tonne when it goes on sale in the UK.

The 4C will be fitted with a mid-mounted all-aluminium 1.7-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, which Alfa claims is a development of the engine already fitted to the Quadrifoglio Verde version of the Giulietta. Alfa is keeping quiet on the car's performance figures, but a power output of around 275bhp and a 0-62mph time of around 4.5 seconds seem likely.

The power will be sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed TCT dual-clutch gearbox with flappy-paddle shifters and the 4C will also get Alfa's DNA system, which allows the driver to choose between Dynamic, Natural and All-weather modes.

There is no word yet on pricing, but expect the 4C to cost from around £40,000, putting it in direct contention with the Porsche Cayman.

The Alfa Romeo 4C will make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March and is expected to go on sale in Europe shortly afterwards.
