The Alfa Romeo 4C has set a lap time of 8 minutes and 4 seconds at the Nurburgring, the fastest time ever recorded for a production car with less than 250PS (247bhp).
The time set is exactly the same as one of the 4C's key rivals, the Porsche Cayman S and is only two seconds off the likes of the Aston Martin DBS and the Mercedes CLK 63 AMG Black -- pretty impressive for a car with a 1.75-litre engine.
However, despite the 4C's tiny engine and comparatively low 237bhp, it will get from 0-62mph in 4.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 160mph. Alfa has managed this by keeping the 4C light -- really light. The car is based on a carbon-fibre tub which is normally the preserve of high-end supercars and Formula One racers and not only does this make the 4C strong, it also means it tips the scales at just 895kg.
The car was fitted with specially-developed Pirelli P Zero tyres which will be available in both 17-inch front/18-inch rear and 18-inch front/19-inch rear sizes on customer cars.
The Alfa Romeo 4C costs from £45,000, with the first customer deliveries expected to take place early next year.
