The all-new Nissan X-Trail has made its world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show ahead of its launch next year.
The new X-Trail is pitched to replace the seven-seat version of the Qashqai and is undeniably more car-like than the old X-Trail. And unlike the old model, the new car will be available for the first time with a choice of both front- and four-wheel drive.
However, despite the new car's more civilised on-road presence, Nissan claims that the X-Trail will retain "famed go-anywhere ability," while redefining what owners can expect from a compact SUV.
Designed to sit above the new Qashqai in the Nissan range when the model is replaced next year, the X-Trail looks remarkably like a bigger, chunkier Qashqai. There are a number of typically Nissan styling touches, including boomerang-shaped rear lights and an aggressive, angular front end.
There's no official word yet on engines; however, we expect the X-Trail to be available with an updated version of the existing X-Trail's 2.0-litre oil-burner and perhaps a smaller, turbocharged petrol engine for lower-mileage drivers.
Nissan president Carlos Ghosn (pictured above) said: "This new X-Trail builds on the reputation earned over three product generations for quality and reliability enhanced by class-leading levels of value, innovation, dynamic performance and premium style."
The new X-Trail will go on sale in the UK in July 2014.
