Ford has confirmed that the next Mondeo will be offered with a new 1.5-litre EcoBoost petrol engine.

The engine, which is set to make its public debut at the Shanghai Motor Show next week, will be available from launch in the new Mondeo, which is scheduled to go on sale in the UK late next year.

Ford has built the new engine with global markets in mind and, as a result, it will find its way into both the Chinese-market Mondeo and the American-market Fusion. The engine is the fifth engine in Ford's EcoBoost range.

The new unit is said to provide similar horsepower and torque performance to Ford's existing 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine, while offering improved fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions. The engine is, of course, turbocharged, and features variable valve timing and direct fuel injection.

Ford also claims that the new engine offers higher levels of engine refinement, quietness and performance.

"Ford EcoBoost technology has changed the way people look at petrol engines and has enjoyed huge success with customers," said Joe Bakaj, Ford vice president of powertrain engineering.

"The new 1.5-litre unit further extends our EcoBoost promise of economical motoring in terms of both fuel efficiency and, in some markets, tax-savings."
