The government plans to tackle many of Britain’s most problematic roads in what they call a ‘roads revolution’.
The plans for road improvements include hundreds of miles of new lanes on motorways and main roads which ministers hope will alleviate some congestion and allow people to make shorter journey times. Successive governments have been under pressure for some time to improve the UK road network as drivers demand more in return from their road tax and fuel duty.
Notable routes for improvement include the A27 on the south coast and the A1 near Newcastle. There is also talk of a tunnel being excavated under Stonehenge in order to ease congestion on the A303.
The Prime Minister David Cameron will give a speech to the Confederation of British Industries and is expected to talk of ''Hundreds of extra lane miles on our motorways and trunk roads. The green light given to major projects that have been stalled for years. Action to improve some of the most important arteries in our country – like the A303 and the A1 – which for too long have held parts of our country back. And all underpinned by over £15bn worth of investment.’’
