If you are looking for an eye-catching convertible this Volkswagen Eos 2.0 TDI BlueMotion Technology is a good choice. It is well equipped for a big convertible that costs just £24,800 and will find favour with cost conscious buyers owing to its impressive fuel consumption figures of 58.9 mpg.

The six-speed gearbox and diesel engine sit well together and while performance figures are not as good as the two petrol models in the range they are still satisfactory.

MP3 and Bluetooth connectivity are standard, but on the down side satellite navigation is only listed as an optional extra and will set you back £785.

PROS:  Striking good looks and excellent fuel economy are the standout features in this competitively priced Eos diesel.

CONS:  Performance levels are lower than other petrol engines in the range.

Behind the Wheel

The 1968 cc 16-valve diesel engine produces a healthy 138 bhp and 4,200 rpm and turns out a well above par 236 lb ft of torque at 1750 rpm making it one of the most responsive in the range.

It boasts a top speed of 129 mph and can reach 0-62 mph in 10.3 seconds.

The leather steering wheel feels comfortable and also houses control for the CD player and climate control functions.

The sport-style front seats add to the comfort factor, and with typically impressive Volkswagen handling, this will feel like a safe motor at urban or highway speeds.

The folding roof retracts within in seconds.

Looks & Equipment

There is no doubt that the Eos is a good looking machine and will turn heads no matter where it goes, and the standard 17 inch alloy wheels set it off nicely.

The basic equipment on this car is exactly what you would expect with power steering, electric front windows and electric mirrors all factory fitted.

Air conditioning is standard, but climate control is available at an extra £460. Cruise control can only be ordered as an optional extra and costs £220. Rear parking sensors are fitted as standard, as is MP3 connectivity and Bluetooth connectivity.

BlueMotion Technology engines include automatic start/stop and brake energy recuperation to cut fuel consumption and reduce emissions.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Since the Eos is based on the Passat family car range there should be no real problems in seating four adults in it quite comfortably, although it is listed to seat five which seems a bit ambitious. The 205 litre boot will not hold too much, and in this sense the model is not a particularly practical one.

Safety equipment includes front driver, passenger and side impact airbags and stability control. Security enhancements include standard fit alarm and immobiliser.

Volkswagen’s standard three year or 60,000 mile warranty should offer peace of mind.

Value for Money

Volkswagen Eos 2.0 TDI BlueMotion Technology is good value for money and given its excellent efficiency, it won’t break the bank to run either. The model comes under insurance group 23 and boasts impressive fuel consumption figures of 58.9 mpg.

This car will provide plenty of fun for any potential owner and is a decent investment considering its good residual values.
