A sports car with great performance credentials, the Vauxhall VXR8 Clubsport is a great option for those after a high performing sports car with enough space for the 2.4 children.

PROS:  Astonishing performance, great handling, practical

CONS:  High running costs, low rent badge, some cheap interior plastics

Behind the Wheel

A maximum power output of 425 bhp at 6000 rpm and torque figures of 405 lb-ft at 4600 rpm means this car has great performance credentials. The VXR8 has strong grip on the road and will reach a limited top speed of 155 mph. On top of this acceleration is very rapid with the car reaching 62 mph in just 4.9 seconds.

The chassis is absolutely superb and has no problem whatsoever in handling all the power produced by the monstrous V8 engine. It is simply astonishing fun to drive.

Looks & Equipment

The VXR8 is a stylish car which offers high levels of comfort, the interior design of this car is well organised and attractive. There is also plenty of kit included as standard.

Standard equipment includes central locking, stability control, power steering, electric front windows, electric door mirrors, climate control, cruise control, an advanced stereo system with CD and MP3 compatibility, a built-in sat nav and Bluetooth connectivity. A metallic paint finish is available at no additional cost and rear parking sensors are also fitted as standard.

Upgrading the interior to include leather seats will cost buyers an additional £1,600, however.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

A high build quality makes this car both practical and reliable. The boot space is a reasonable 496 litres which is larger than some rivals.

Stability control and driver, passenger and front side airbags areall fitted as standard to protect the VXR8's occupants.

To protect the car from theft the model also comes with an alarm and immobiliser fitted as standard.

Value for Money

At £45,000 the VXR8 is expensive to buy but reasonably priced when you consider the sheer amount of car you're getting for the money.

The car runs on super unleaded fuel and with efficiency of just 20.9 mpg this means the refuelling will be both expensive and frequent. On top of this, the poor green credentials mean that a number of other motoring costs will be higher. Road tax, for example, falls under the highest band (M) due to steep carbon emissions of 320g/km.

Insurance premiums will also be high falling under the highest insurance group (50). Of course, these costs are to be expected from a car of this class.
