The Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer SE 1.3 CDTi ecoFLEX Start/Stop is an attractive and economical family car. It is also a practical proposition but comes at a high cost - you could get an Insignia at this price.

PROS:  High fuel efficiency and low carbon emissions means this car is gentle on the environment and on buyers’ finances.

CONS:  The high purchase price is a huge deterrent and there are plenty of rival manufacturers who offer similar models at a lower price.

Behind the Wheel

Developing 94 bhp at 4000 rpm and 140 lb-ft of torque at 1750-3250 rpm, this 1.3 litre diesel engine propels the Astra from 0-62mph in a fairly lazy 13.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 109 mph.

The engine runs quietly and noise from the wind and road only becomes excessive at high speeds. The steering is a little numb but the Astra Sports Tourer is very comfortable and handles well through the corners.

Looks & Equipment

The Astra Sports Tourer carries on where the hatchback leaves off and shares its smaller brothers good looks, both inside and out. The SE trim level is offers a great selection of options for customers and provides some improvements over the Exclusiv trim.

Standard features include power steering, central locking, stability control, air conditioning, electric door mirrors, electric front windows, cruise control and an advanced stereo with CD and MP3 compatibility – the same as in the Exclusiv trim level.

On top of this, alloy wheels and an alarm are also fitted as standard. Bluetooth connectivity and a built-in sat nav can still be added for £220 and £855 respectively. Climate control, rear parking sensors and a metallic paint finish also cost the same as they do in the Exclusiv trim level, priced at £305, £395 and £495 respectively. Leather seats are not an option on this model.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The car should be fairly reliable, benefitting from a warranty for 100,000 miles with a service recommended every 20,000 miles.

The Astra performed well in the NCAP crash tests, achieving a five star rating for overall safety. This is partly thanks to the advanced safety kit which is fitted as standard. This includes driver, passenger and front side airbags.

An immobiliser is fitted to protect the car from theft. An alarm becomes a standard feature as well at this trim level.

The Astra has an impressive boot capacity which stands at an impressive 500 litres with the seats in place and a cavernous 1,550 litres when the seats are folded down.

Value for Money

Priced at £22,165, the Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer is expensive for what it is. The range also suffers from poor resale values.

However, running costs should be low thanks to impressive fuel efficiency of 68.9mpg and low CO2 emissions of 109g/km which ensure that the Astra Sport Tourer falls under VED band B. Insurance should also be cheap under group 9.

The buyer will have to decide whether they can reconcile the high purchase price with the low running costs offered. If you only intend to keep the Astra for a short period of time, it will not be worth the extra expense but as a long-term proposition, it might just make sense.
