Background
The Vauxhall Astra was originally produced in 1980 and replaced the Vauxhall Viva. It was Vauxhalls first model to have front wheel drive and achieved a good amount of sales in its first generation.
The Mark 2 version of the Astra arrived in 1984 a re-designed body style to that of the Mark 1 but with the same range of engines as the Mark 1. The Astra continued to have good sales with the Mark 2.
The Mark 3 then hit the market in 1991 and was the first of the Astras - and one of the first cheaper family cars - to begin incorporating safety features and using them as a selling point. The Mark 3 was then replaced by the Mark 4 in 1998, the Mark 4 continued the Astra’s new found emphasis on safety and addressed a lot of the criticisms of the Mark 3 Astra.
The Mark 5 Astra was introduced in 2004 and received much success, it was made available as a five-door hatchback and eventually a five-door estate and a sporty three-door hatchback. The Mark 6 version then replaced the Mark 5 in 2009.
Overview
