MPG: 47.9

BHP: 138 BHP
Range: 590 miles
PROS: Spacious, comfortable, good looking
CONS: Interior feels cheap in places, steep depreciation
Delivering a decent power output of 138 bhp at 4900-6000 rpm with 147 lb-ft of torque at 1850-4900 rpm, this coupe is capable of a more than acceptable top speed of 125 mph. 0-62mph takes 9.0 seconds which, while not exactly fast, means that the Astra GTC doesn't feel slow.
The handling is great and the GTC just grips and grips and grips. The ride is very good too - Vauxhall haven't sacrificed ride comfort for handling prowess.
If it was our money though, we'd opt for one of the diesels - the 2.0-litre unit is the pick of the range and offers better performance credentials alongside far superior fuel economy.
The Astra GTC, like the Astra hatch, looks absolutely brilliant. Vauxhall really are building some fine looking cars at the moment. We approve.
The GTC offers a decent level of standard equipment including power steering, central locking, stability control, alloy wheels, air conditioning, electric door mirrors, electric front windows, cruise control and an advanced stereo system with CD and MP3 compatibility.
Additional extras such as Bluetooth connectivity, a built-in sat nav, rear parking sensors and climate control are also available for an additional cost. The car can also be upgraded to a metallic paint finish on the exterior for £495 but there is no option for leather seats in the interior.
There is plenty of space within the vehicle for passengers with the rear seats surprisingly spacious. Numerous storage spaces are available within the cabin as well and the boot offers an impressive 380 litres, expanding to 1,165 litres when the rear seats are folded down. Access to the rear seats can be tricky, however.
The Astra GTC should be safe and comes fitted with driver, passenger and front side airbags all as standard.
An immobiliser and alarm are fitted to deter thieves and reliability shouldn't be an issue as the GTC comes with a 100,000 mile warranty.
Priced at £19,080, the Astra GTC Sport 1.4 16v Turbo Start/Stop (140ps) is relatively well priced, however, running costs are not as low as they could be. Road tax falls under tax band E thanks to CO2 emissions of 140g/km and insurance premiums are likely to be moderate under insurance group 16. Fuel efficiency of 47.1 mpg on the combined cycle isn’t bad for a petrol model but the diesels offer far superior efficiency, making them the better bet.
The Vauxhall Astra GTC Sport 1.4 16v Turbo Start/Stop (140ps) 3dr also suffers from high levels of depreciation and that means investing in this model could be a risk, especially if buyers are only looking for short term ownership.
