The Toyota Yaris TR 1.0 VVT-i leads the market in small, good value family cars. It set the standard for the cars of its size when it was first released and forced other manufacturers to rethink their own small cars. Other models may look better or perform better, but the Yaris' all-round competency and value for money is hard to beat.

PROS:  The five door Yaris TR 1.0 VVT-i has plenty of room for a car of its size. Its low running costs mean that it is an ideal choice for a family on a budget.

CONS:  The performance of the Yaris TR 1.0 VVT-i does not compare well to some of its competitors in its class. The interior also leaves a lot to be desired, looking plastic and cheap.

Behind the Wheel

This new version of the Yaris is lighter than the previous version, having dropped 20kg. However its handling is still some way behind its competitors such as the Ford Fiesta. Power is also lacking with the Yaris TR 1.0 VVT-i only capable of reaching a maximum speed of 96mph. The acceleration is equally disappointing, reaching 62mph in 15.3 seconds.

The Yaris TR 1.0 VVT-i is a little jittery when driving over rougher surfaces, but should be fine with regular city driving. Motorway driving could prove trickier due to its low top speed and less-than-smooth ride. The engine is worked hard on the motorway and is noisy at high speed. The smaller three door diesel version is an all-round better performer.

The Yaris TR 1.0 VVT-i does redeem itself with lower fuel economy and emissions than many of its competitors; it is capable of 58.9mpg and produces carbon emissions of 111g/km.

Looks & Equipment

The standard T2 version of the Yaris has a number of features as standard including a CD player, Bluetooth connectivity and an immobiliser. Satnav can be fitted for an extra £500.

The styling on the Yaris TR 1.0 VVT-i is certainly a lot better than most cars in its class. The smooth lines and aerodynamic design are in sharp contrast to some models available at a similar price such as the offerings from Hyundai and Nissan.

The interior of the Yaris TR 1.0 VVT-i appears clunky and plastic. It appears that you get what you pay for with dashboard and trim. The seats are fully adjustable but taller drivers may find longer journeys uncomfortable. When you add in the poor ride quality and performance, long distance travel in the Yaris could prove to be an ordeal.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

There is plenty of room in the five door version. The rear seats might be a bit of a squeeze for bigger passengers but there is plenty of space for the driver and front passenger. Boot space in the Yaris is good with 347 litres on offer - bigger than both the Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Corsa.

Although it is small the Yaris TR 1.0 VVT-i scored high on the Euro NCAP crash test, achieving the maximum of five stars for safety. Many of the safety features come as standard including ABS, traction control and a brake assist system. Toyota provides a better warranty than its rivals. The Yaris comes with a five year 100,000 mile warranty but Toyota’s reputation for reliability means that customers are unlikely to need it on a regular basis.

Value for Money

The standard 5 door Yaris TR 1.0 VVT-i costs £12,760 brand new - around the same as the Honda Jazz which comes in at £12,869. The car offers very good value for money and is a competent all-rounder.
