The Toyota Yaris SR 1.33 VVT-i Multidrive S 5dr is a competent all-rounder. It doesn't excel in any areas but is more than adequate in all. Decent performance, decent handling and decent practicality make this car a decent proposition, but there are better cars around for the money.

PROS:  The SR 1.33 VVT-i Multidrive S 5dr offers good looks, reliability, fuel economy and value for money, making it an attractive overall package.

CONS:  The interior is, frankly, shocking; cheap plastics abound. Some of the Yaris' rivals are more desirable.

Behind the Wheel

The 1.3-litre engine is well suited to the car and it manages 0-62mph in 11.7 seconds thanks to 98bhp and 92lb-ft of torque. Top speed is 11.7 seconds.

The new model is 20kg lighter than its predecessor, which should improve driving dynamics. This isn’t however the case and the end result is in fact a little disappointing. The Yaris seems to struggle slightly with any sudden direction changes and bumps in the road, making it more suitable for city driving than long motorway slogs.

The steering is direct and wind, road and engine noise are well tamed on the open road.

Looks & Equipment

The Yaris is a good-looking car that is sure to appeal to many prospective buyers, however some may find the exterior a little cutesy.

The inside feels like it has been built to a budget. The quality of the interior plastics is absolutely shocking; they feel scratchy, hard and flimsy. The seats are also very thinly padded and offer no support whatosoever.

On the plus side, you get a good level of equipment with CD, Bluetooth, rear parking camera, electric front windows, alloys and air-con all coming as standard. Metallic paint will cost you £450 while sat-nav is a £500 extra.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Toyota Yaris SR 1.33 VVT-i Multidrive S 5dr has achieved a five star safety rating in the Euro NCAP crash tests with driver, passenger and side airbags all included as standard.

The Yaris also offers plenty of practicality. With the rear seats in place you get 347-litre of boot space and folding the 60:40 rear bench flat gives you 768-litres to play with. There is also plenty of space in the cabin and rear legroom is very good for a car of this size.

Reliability should not be an issue given Toyota's legendary Japanese build quality and the Yaris comes with a superb five year/10,000 mile warranty.

Value for Money

The Toyota Yaris SR 1.33 VVT-i is priced at £14,835. Although this is very reasonable, you can get a top-of-the-range 1.4-litre Fiesta for a couple of hundred pounds less and this is arguably a much better car.

On the plus side, running costs should be low with the Yaris falling under VED band D thanks to CO2 emissions of 121g/km. You should also get 53.3mpg, so fuel costs will be manageable.
