The Auris TR 1.33 VVT-i perfectly encapsulates the Toyota brand in one car. So it's reliable, cheap and practical but at the same time slow, dull and cheap-feeling.

PROS:  Well equipped, reliable, practical, handsome

CONS:  Mediocre performance, noisy

Behind the Wheel

The TR 1.33 VVT-i 5dr's 1329cc engine offers 100bhp and 97 lb-ft of torque at 3800rpm. 0-62mph therefore takes a slow 13.1 seconds. The Toyota Auris TR 1.33 VVT-i 5dr has a top speed of just 109mph, which is fine for short journeys but not so great on the open road.

The Auris rides comfortably and handles competently. However, don't expect any thrills behind the wheel. This is not an exciting car.

Looks & Equipment

The Toyota Auris TR 1.33 VVT-i 5dr comes with power steering, central locking, alloy wheels, climate control and rear parking sensors, Bluetooth, CD and MP3 connectivity as standard. Extra options include the metallic paint, leather seats and sat-nav.

The Auris is a bland looking car but it is not ugly. It is certainly a vast improvement over the old Corolla.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Toyota Auris TR 1.33 VVT-i 5dr should be very reliable thanks to Toyota's legendary build quality. All Auris models are supplied with a five year/100,000 mile warranty as standard.

The interior materials feel durable but look and feel cheap and nasty - a common criticism of Japanese cars.

Every TR comes with front, side and curtain airbags as well as an additional airbag, which is there to protect the driver’s knees. The Toyota TR 1.33 VVT-i 5dr received the full five stars from Euro NCAP.

Value for Money

The Toyota TR1.33 VVT-i 5dr is priced at £16,730. This price undercuts many of its rivals, making the Auris excellent value for money.

Running costs should also be low thanks to fuel economy of 47.9mpg and CO2 emissions of 136g/km which put the car under VED band E.

The Auris should also hold its value relatively well, making it a cost effective car to own.
