For those looking for a car which delivers decent levels of performance alongside good levels of interior comfort, the Skoda Fabia SE Plus 1.2 TSI 105ps DSG could be the ideal car. The top speed and acceleration figures are more than adequate for a car of this class and the enhanced comfort of the cabin makes the driving experience more pleasant. The only deterrent likely to affect buyers is the purchase price, but with the car still offering good efficiency levels, those looking for long term ownership will find the extra cost pays for itself.

PROS:  Performance levels are fairly high for a family car and this 1.2 litre model outperforms the Fabia S 1.6 TDI CR whilst offering more in-car features.

CONS:  The purchase price is a little higher than on other models within the range and with some in-car features still only available at cost this means the overall price could be fairly high.

Behind the Wheel

A four cylinder engine delivers a healthy power output of 104 bhp at 5000 rpm with torque figures of 129 lb-ft at 1500-4100 rpm. This gives the car a great top speed of 117 mph whilst acceleration is a quicker than in other models with the car taking 10.2 seconds to travel from 0-62 mph.

The steering of the car is firm and stable, but unfortunately the car’s height puts it at a disadvantage and there is a high amount of body roll during corners and bends.

The engine’s efficiency is still a strong attribute and the car is able to achieve an impressive 53.3 mpg on a combined cycle. On top of this, carbon emissions are fairly low at 124 g/km and this means that the car has strong green credentials and benefits from relatively low road tax costs.

Looks & Equipment

The Fabia looks a little clumsy from the outside, due to the bulky front, so it is not the most attractive car on the market. In the interior, the car comes with basic equipment as standard and this trim level offers more features than the Skoda Fabia S 1.6 TDI CR.

Standard equipment includes power steering, central locking, stability control, alloy wheels, climate control, electric door mirrors, electric front windows and an advanced stereo system with both CD and MP3 connectivity.

Part-leather seats, cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity, rear parking sensors and a built in sat nav can all be added for an additional cost with cruise control the cheapest option at £175 and part-leather seats the most expensive at £600.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The reliabilty is good and the build is great quality. The fit and finish of internal instruments is high quality and the materials feel solid to touch without looking cheap.

As a family car, practicality will be a priority with this car and the Fabia offers plenty of cabin space for passengers thanks to the long shape of the car. There is also plenty of adjustment within the steering wheel and seats to allow drivers and passengers find the most comfortable seating position and this means practicality is high.

On top of this, the boot capacity of the car is fairly reasonable for a family car and there is 315 litres of space on offer when all of the seats are in place. Collapsing these down expands this capacity to an impressive 1,180 litres which makes it ideal as a family car.

The car comes with driver, passenger and front side air bags all fitted as standard features. To protect the car from theft there is an immobiliser fitted as standard with the additional security of an alarm also provided as standard.

Value for Money

Priced at £13,935 this car is more expensive than some models in this range but still fairly reasonable considering the efficiency which is offered. The fuel consumption of 53.3 mpg means that refuelling shouldn’t be expensive for the average driver and will make this car cheap to keep on the road. Road tax falls into a relatively cheap tax band (D) due to low carbon emissions of 124 g/km and even insurance premiums are reasonable in insurance group 13.

Whilst this model lacks the higher economic savings of the Skoda Fabia S 1.6 TDI CR it still performs well within its class and its additional comfort levels and higher performance means it could be the perfect compromise for those looking for a family car which offers both efficiency and attitude.
