For those looking for a car which delivers decent levels of practicality alongside high levels of efficiency, the Skoda Fabia Estate Greenline II 1.2 TDI CR is a great option. Green credentials are one of the strongest features of this car and low running costs combine with an affordable purchase price to make it a good investment. Unfortunately the performance is a little lacking, but those willing to make this small sacrifice will gain a car which offers great value for money.

PROS:  Exempt from road tax thanks to ultra-low carbon emissions and falling into a low insurance bracket, this family estate offers plenty of benefits to drivers.

CONS:  Performance credentials are a little low and this means that the car struggles to gain speed.

Behind the Wheel

A three cylinder engine delivers a healthy power output of 74 bhp (75 ps) at 4000 rpm with torque figures of 133 lb-ft at 2000 rpm. This gives the car a decent top speed of 107 mph but acceleration is a little on the slow side with the car taking 14.3 seconds to travel from 0-62 mph.

The engine’s efficiency is one of its strongest attributes and the car is able to achieve an impressive 83.1 mpg on a combined cycle. On top of this, carbon emissions are extremely low at just 89 g/km and this means that the car has strong green credentials and is exempt from road tax.

In terms of handling, the steering of the car is firm and stable, but there is a fair amount of body roll around corners and bends due to the height of the car.

Looks & Equipment

The Fabia looks a little clumsy due to the bulky front end and this means it is not the most attractive car on the market. In the interior, the car comes with a decent selection of basic equipment as standard, although some luxuries are either unavailable on this model or incur additional costs.

Standard equipment includes power steering, central locking, stability control, alloy wheels, air conditioning, electric door mirrors, electric front windows and an advanced stereo system with both CD and MP3 connectivity.

For an extra £335 Bluetooth connectivity can be added whilst rear parking sensors and a metallic paint finish are priced at £280 and £440 respectively. The air conditioning can also be upgraded to climate control for an additional £275.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

For a family car practicality will be a priority and the Fabia offers plenty of cabin space for passengers thanks to the long shape of the car. There is also plenty of adjustment for the steering wheel and seats to allow drivers and passengers to find the most comfortable seating position.

On top of this, the boot capacity of the car is fairly reasonable for a family car and there is 505 litres of space on offer when all of the seats are in place. Collapsing these expands this capacity to an impressive 1,485 litres which makes it ideal as a family car.

The build-quality is high within this model and this means that reliability is assured. The fit and finish of internal instruments is good and the materials feel solid and stable to touch without looking cheap.

In terms of safety, the car comes with driver, passenger and front side air bags all fitted as standard features. To protect the car from theft there is an immobiliser fitted as standard alongside an alarm.

Value for Money

Priced at £14,420 this car is fairly reasonable considering the efficiency which is offered. The fuel consumption of 83.1 mpg means that refuelling will be inexpensive, offering great financial savings for customers. Carbon emissions of under 100 g/km mean that this car is exempt from road tax costs by falling under tax band A and even insurance premiums are likely to be incredibly low by falling under insurance group 8.

On top of this there is a good range of internal equipment and strong resale values for the car mean that this is a wise investment. The only downside is the mediocre power credentials which lack the performance that would make this car stand out from the crowd.
