The Modus is a cracking mini MPV which boasts practicality, good looks and superb fuel economy. However, this Expression model is quite basic and if you want more equipment, you're best off upgrading to the Dynamique.

PROS:  The Modus is a cleverly packaged small MPV with tonnes of space inside, an economical diesel engine and good build quality.

CONS:  The boot isn't particularly big and the Modus is dull to drive.

Behind the Wheel

The Renault Modus Expression dCi 88 is fitted with Renault's 1.5-litre four-cylinder diesel engine. The engine is well suited to the Modus and develops 88bhp and 148lb-ft of torque which makes for a 0-62mph time of 11.0 seconds and a top speed of 108mph.

The ride is let down by stiff suspension and the Modus is no fun to drive either thanks to a lack of grip and quite a bit of body roll through the corners.

Looks & Equipment

The Modus is a good looking car. It would be churlish to call it desirable - MPVs are never desirable - but it looks stylish and contemporary. The interior is also very pleasant and the quality of the interior plastics is beyond what most would expect from a Renault.

Standard equipment includes air-con, electric windows and a CD player. Optional extras include rear parking sensors (£315), metallic paint (£455), alloy wheels (£520) and stability control (£315).

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Renault have a superb reputation for building safe cars and the Modus too should be very safe, having scored the full five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests.

French cars are not renowned for their reliability but the Modus was developed in conjunction with Nissan and has so far proven to be very reliable. It is offered with a 3 year/100,000 mile warranty as standard.

There's plenty of space inside the Modus and you'll easily seat five adults in relative comfort. The boot isn't massive but you get a decent 217-litres of space with the rear seats up and 1195-litres with the rear seats down.

Value for Money

The Modus Expression dCi 88 is very competitively priced at £12,445 and offers very good value for money considering the sheer amount of car that you get.

It should also be very cheap to run thanks to its ultra-efficient diesel engine which returns an impressive 68.9mpg and emits just 107g/km of CO2. Group B road tax will be very cheap and Group 10 insurance is very reasonable indeed.
