It's surprising that the Modus hasn't been more popular because it's a terrific little car. It offers bags of practicality and is well-made for a Renault. However, this is the weakest model in the range and you'd be well advised to go for the 1.5-litre diesel which is superb.

PROS:  Renault's Modus is a practical, economical and well built mini-MPV.

CONS:  The diesel models in the range are better and the Modus is no fun to drive.

Behind the Wheel

The Renault Modus Dynamique 1.2 TCe is fitted with Renault's 1.2-litre petrol engine which develops 100bhp and 112lb-ft of torque. It's not the best engine in the range and has to be worked hard to give its best which affects refinement. You're better off with the excellent 1.5-litre diesel engine.

As you would expect, the Modus is no fun to drive. There's a distinct lack of grip from the front wheels and if you get a bit heavy handed, you're treated to squealing understeer. Not good.

The ride is a little too firm and the Modus has a tendency to roll through the bends.

Looks & Equipment

The Modus is a handsome little car and the interior is also very stylish. The quality of the cabin materials is also very good and the Modus has a robust quality to it.

Standard kit includes alloys, air-con, cruise control, electric windows and a CD player. Optional extras include rear parking sensors (£315), metallic paint (£445) and climate control (£445).

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Renaults are not renowned for their reliability but the Modus was developed in conjunction with Nissan and has so far proven to be very reliable. It is offered with a 3 year/100,000 mile warranty as standard.

There's plenty of space inside the Modus and you'll easily seat five adults in relative comfort. The boot isn't massive but you get a decent 217-litres of space with the rear seats up and 1195-litres with the rear seats down.

Renault have a superb reputation for building safe cars and the Modus too should be very safe, having scored the full five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests back in 2004.

Value for Money

The Modus Dynamique 1.2 TCe 100 is cheap to buy at £12,350 although, in terms of value for money, the diesel model is much better value thanks to its lower running costs.

The 1.2-litre engine returns 47.1mpg which isn't bad but isn't particularly good for this class either. CO2 emissions of 139g/km push the Modus up into VED band E but insurance should be relatively cheap in group 11.
