Designed as a replacement for the successful CLK coupé, the E-Class Coupé 500 sport is classy rather than sporty, with an emphasis on comfort rather than excitement.

PROS:  With a bold and original exterior design and a luxurious, driver friendly cabin, the E-Class Coupé oozes style and class.

CONS:  You do not get a smooth ride in the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé 500 sport. In fact it is decidedly bumpy at times. There is also a lack of headroom and it can be dull to drive.

Behind the Wheel

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé 500 offers reasonable performance from a lively 5461cc V8 engine, but it can be a little bit dull to drive.

Delivering a power of 392bhp at 6,000rpm and producing a torque of 390lb-ft at 2800-4800rpm the top speed is 155mph with acceleration from 0-62mph in 5.2 seconds.

With agility control suspension and uprated dampers the handling is good, and significantly better than the E-Class Saloon.

The 7-speed automatic transmission handles the gear changes for you and is very smooth.

Looks & Equipment

Polished, classy looks on the outside are continued as you step inside with a real luxury feel to the interior.

There is also a good range of high-quality equipment which has been included. All of the E-Class Coupés come with drowsiness detection, Pre-Safe occupant protection, parking guidance systems and an active bonnet to increase pedestrian safety.

The E-Class Coupé 500 Sport also features cruise control and climate control as standard, alarm and immobiliser to protect from theft and driver, passenger and front-side airbags to protect you and your passenger, leather seats and alloy wheels to finish of the stylish looks, plus power steering, central locking, electric door mirrors, CD player, MP3 and Bluetooth connectivity.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

If you overlook the lack of headspace the E-Class is actually pretty spacious for a Coupé offering a 450-litre storage space in the boot, plus plenty of space for bits and pieces in the centre cubby, large door bins, and nets located underneath the seats.

Improved engine efficiency and a streamlined low-drag body have reduced fuel consumption across the E-Class Coupé range, but the 500 sport is more thirsty than other variants, offering 25.9mpg with CO2 emissions of 254g/km.

It fits into an insurance group of 44L.

Value for Money

With the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé range starting at £31,465, the 500 Sport is a significant step up at a list price of £52,915, and with higher running costs as well you get an a great car, but perhaps not the best value for money.
