The E-Class has been a staple of the Mercedes-Benz range of cars for many years, and it really is one of the cars that emphasises everything that they do best. The E-Class 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Avantgarde Auto offers brisk performance and good fuel efficiency while the suspension irons out bumps on the road, and the high quality cabin offers plenty of nice touches.

PROS:  The E-Class is the epitomy of what a Mercedes-Benz should be, combining luxury, refinement and reliability with power and fuel efficiency.

CONS:  The engine can get a little noisy when being worked hard, and driving pleasure has been sacrificed in favour of comfort.

Behind the Wheel

The E-Class 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Avantgarde Auto offers a supremely comfortable ride, however, the fairly soft suspension means that there isn't too much feedback through the wheel, and the car is much more suitable for those who value comfort over performance. The driving position is very good, and the seat and steering wheel are fully adjustable. There is also good visibility to the front and rear.

The automatic gearbox actually improves performance figures over the manual version and the car can get from 0-62mph in a brisk 7.5 seconds. The top speed of 150mph means that the E-Class will be well within its comfort zone on most motorway journeys, with the 2.2-litre diesel engine a distant hum in the cabin.

Looks & Equipment

The E-Class 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Avantgarde Auto has traditional Mercedes styling and the split grille at the front end is a classic Merc design feature. The styling is elegant, and the back end is simple and effective, lending the car an understated, handsome look. Inside the centre console does have quite a lot of buttons, but the majority of systems are linked to the main screen, with dashboard dials that are also simple and well designed.

Standard equipment on the E-Class 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Avantgarde Auto includes alloy wheels, leather seats, cruise control, climate control, power heated seats and power folding mirrors. The E-Class also has an extensive options list offering sat nav (£785), metallic paint (£645), electric sunroof (£990) and a rear seat entertainment system (£1765).

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The E-Class 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Avantgarde Auto is a car that has been well designed on the whole, and can comfortably accommodate four people, but the large transmission tunnel could make things a little uncomfortable for the fifth passenger. The boot is capable of carrying plenty of luggage. The E-Class is one of the cars that has helped Mercedes-Benz to develop an excellent reputation for reliable cars.

In terms of the safety of the E-Class, it has been awarded five stars in the Euro NCAP safety tests, and comes with a good range of airbags and driver aids to keep the car and occupants safe while on the road.

Value for Money

The list price of £35,900 puts the E-Class 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Avantgarde Auto in the middle of the E-Class range.

The fuel efficiency of the E-Class is very good, with this diesel engine able to deliver an average 57.6mpg. It is worth noting that the insurance group for the car is still quite high, meaning that premiums are unlikely to be cheap, and depreciation is fairly typical of saloons like this. The Mercedes-Benz three year unlimited warranty is very good, and also comes with roadside breakdown recovery.
