PROS: Both the ride and the interior are luxurious. This car also comes with a great amount of safety kit.
CONS: At £30,145 it is quite an expensive car. For the money you pay the drive is less involving compared to some of its rivals. Not only that, but for the price, the entry level lacks power.
There are three new four-cylinder engines. This diesel engine gives 170bhp and torque figures of 295lf/ft. This gives an acceleration speed of 0-62mph in 8.7 seconds and a top speed of 143mph. Acceleration is impressive whatever engine you choose, and is most impressive at higher speeds on the motorway.
The E-Class is very comfortable and requires little effort to drive which is thanks to the light steering. The E-Class feels most at home on the motorway giving a drive that is relaxed. Mercedes have focused on comfortability for the E-Class. Its rivals such as BMW and Audi put handling and driver involvement at a higher requirement compared to comfort.
This car looks great and is a lot more striking than some of its rivals such as the Audi A6, yet it still remains traditional in design as opposed to the BMW 5 Series.
The interior of the E-Class is spacious and comfortable, yet it is still oh so classy. The cabin is awash with dark wood or an aluminium trim depending on the spec you go for. These effects compliment the black plastics and upholstery. Both the front and rear seats are comfortable even for longer journeys. The dashboard is clutter free thanks to the fact that most of the gadgets in the car are controlled from a central console and joystick. The lack of buttons just adds to the sleek look of the car.
Equipment wise you get a huge amount in the E-Class, as you would expect. Even the entry-level SE models get: 16-inch alloy wheels, leather-style seats, heated front seats, climate control, conventional suspension, and parking sensors.
The E-Class is surprisingly roomy giving ample space for both front and rear passengers. Rear legroom in this model is particularly good. Boot space wise you get 540 litres beating its rival of the BMW 5 Series by 20 litres.
Due to the complicated computer systems in the last E-Class there were a few problems. These problems however have led to this new model being extensively redesigned and put through lots of tests to ensure a worry free ownership. After 21 million development miles involving more than 400 test cars, Mercedes is confident the new car will instil confidence in the brand and the E-Class range.
Safety kit wise you get: nine airbags, ABS and stability control are fitted as standard. The bonnet pops up in a pedestrian collision and the car can monitor for potential drowsiness at the wheel. The E-Class scored a full five stars in the EuroNCAP crash tests. This is thanks to extensive design measures and the latest in safety technology. The E-Class underwent 17,000 simulated crash tests before a real car was ever damaged. So owners can rest assure that this is a safe car.
The E-Class has really cleaned up its act when it comes to emissions, emitting only 130g/km and giving 56.5mpg. Its rival the Audi A6 is only just cleaner with emissions at 129g/km. This car falls into car tax band D and represents great value for money with its fuel efficiency and strong residual values.
