PROS: One of the fastest and most powerful cars that Mercedes-Benz offers, combining an excellent driving experience and sensational engine noise with real luxury and a high quality cabin.
CONS: The interior could be made even more luxurious and the hefty price tag and running costs mean that this isn't a car that has been designed for cost efficiency.
The driving experience is fabulous and the ride is actually quite comfortable. The AMG-tuned chassis means that this handles like a much smaller car, darting into corners without sacrificing ride comfort. The low driving position is comfortable and the luxury seats and steering wheel are all adjustable, making for good all-round visibility.
Performance is the one area in which the CL-Class Coupe 65 AMG really shines, accelerating from 0-62mph in an exceptionally fast 4.4 seconds. The car does have an electronically limited top speed of 155mph, but there is no doubt that the 6.0 litre engine could deliver much more than that if given free reign.
The CL-Class Coupe 65 AMG is certainly aggresively styled with a sleek chrome grille topped off by the iconic three-pointed star badge. The sleek body is very aerodynamic, and the tidy back end complements the rest of the car wonderfully. Inside the car the fittings are very nice, and the luxury trim is good, but the interior fails to offer the stand-out qualities of many of its rivals.
All of the typical luxuries that would be expected are included, with satellite navigation, hands free phone kit, Bluetooth connectivity, electric sunroof, power heated seats, cruise control, climate control and alloy wheels all included as standard.
When it comes to practicality, the car can accommodate four people in a completely comfortable environment, and the boot space is reasonable, if not huge. Reliability is one of the main selling points for many smaller versions of Mercedes-Benz cars, and this is a feature that can be expected from the CL-Class too.
As you would expect from such an advanced vehicle, there are many innovative and clever driving aids which help to channel all that power through the wheels effectively. It also comes with a good range of airbags that will look after the occupants in an accident, but it hasn't been subjected to an Euro NCAP safety test yet.
If you are thinking of buying a Mercedes-Benz CL-Class, the AMG 65 variant is the most expensive on the market, with a list price of £161,595. This is £15k more than a Ferrari California and over £30k more than the cheapest Aston Martin DB9.
The financial outlay doesn't end there however, as the car gets the highest insurance group available meaning that premiums will be significant, and when it comes to selling the car depreciation is likely to be a very big problem. Fuel efficiency has been sacrificed for performance, and the average 19.8mpg means that fuel stops will be a regular occurence. On the plus side, the CL-Class does come with a good three year unlimited mileage warranty and roadside breakdown assistance.
