The 500 Blue Efficiency is the most practical of the CL-Class range, but if you have enough money to buy this car, you probably have enough to upgrade and really make the most of buying a CL-Class car.

However, the 500 Blue Efficiency is by no means a second-class option – the V8 engine is huge and the handling is controlled and stable. The steering could be a little sharper. The CL looks the part too, with classy exterior and interior features.

The CL-Class is based on the S-Class, which is still a better car and much cheaper.

PROS:  The 500 Blue Efficiency is the cheapest in the CL-Class range and has suburb driveability, from the handling to the powerful engine. It looks the part too.

CONS:  Although it is the cheapest in the CL range, this by no means counts it as inexpensive – the 500 Blue Efficiency is incredibly costly to buy and run and does not perform to the level of the S-Class.

Behind the Wheel

The handling of the CL-Class is excellent, especially considering the bulk of the coupe. Steering could be sharper and more responsive though.

The V8 engine is 4663cc and uses unleaded petrol with a fuel tank capacity of 90 litres. There is a seven-speed automatic gearbox, which provides smooth acceleration.

The engine is refined to the point of being almost silent and although there is a tiny bit of wind noise at high speeds, the coupes are incredibly quiet.

The 500 BlueEFFICIENCY has a 429bhp engine delivering 516lb-ft of torque at 1800-3500rpm and reaches 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds with a top speed of 155mph.

Looks & Equipment

The interior of the CL-Class coupe is well-designed and high-quality, living up to the reputation of Mercedes-Benz as a stylish manufacturer. There is nothing to fault in the cabin and it is decked out in sleek leather and wood trim.

The seat and steering wheel adjust comfortably and the dash is comprehensive with the Command system proving easy access to the equipment such as satellite navigation and stereo, although it is a bit more distracting than the BMW’s iDrive system. The seats are supportive and comfortable and the visibility good.

The 500 BlueEFFICIENCY comes with leather seats, power steering, cruise control, rear parking sensors, metallic paint, climate control, stability control, alloy wheels, Bluetooth, satellite navigation, MP3 connectivity and stereo as standard.

For fuel economy, the CL-Class coupe has a start/stop system, which allows for great efficiency and low CO2 emissions.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The CL-Class coupe comes with all the safety equipment you would expect in a high-quality car including driver, passenger and front side airbags, alarm and immobiliser as standard. It also has the stability control, Attention Assist system, which alerts tired drivers, the Pre-Safe anticipatory crash-protection system and a pop-up bonnet to protect pedestrians in the case of a collision.

Mercedes-Benz has a great record in reliability and came 6th in the 2011 JD Power survey out of 28 other manufacturers.

The boot is a large size offering 490 litres of space. The CL-Class coupe has loads of room in the front and in the rear, with back seat passengers having plenty of space, although perhaps not for long distances.

Value for Money

The running costs are high with the CL-Class coupes despite the efficient engine stop/start system. The 500 BlueEFFICIENCY model costs £92,320 and has a combined economy of 29.4mpg and CO2 emissions of 227g/km.

The CL-Class is based on the S-Class, but does not quite live up to the S-Class expectations. As the CL-Class cars are very expensive, your money would be better invested in an S-Class.

The resale value on the CL-Class coupe is excellent and Mercedes-Benz promise good service and reliability as well, although servicing is expensive.
